How massage can help when suffering from headaches or migraines

26/7/2015

JOYA Massage for headaches and migraines
For hundreds, if not thousands of years, massage therapy has been a tool to aid in the relief of health related issues including headaches and migraines. The most common headaches are vascular and muscle tension headaches. Vascular headaches, a result of swelling and constricting blood vessels, are typically accompanied by throbbing or pounding pain. Tension headaches, caused by tense muscles, cause a dull constant pain, often on both sides of the head. Both types of headaches may last for hours or days. Massage can relieve both types by relaxing the tense muscles, causing them to place less pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that supply them.

Massage has also been found to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Research at The Touch Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine found that massage therapy decreased the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances and distress symptoms while increasing serotonin levels in adults with migraine headaches.

Though massage is known to help with these symptoms, it can also be used as a preventative measure, decreasing the likelihood of headaches or migraines or the severity of them.

Migraines and other types of headaches are one of the most common complaints seen in the doctor's office today. The Mayo Clinic recommends that patients with migraines spend at least a half-hour each day doing something either relaxing or that involves the relaxation of muscles. Self-massage is a great way to do that. If you are finding it awkward or don’t have enough strength in your fingers and hands – most people don’t, - don’t stress, as there is JOYA! With a JOYA Massage Roller – The Mini is extremely easy to use on the head, neck and face - you can enjoy the benefits of massages every day.  And the best thing – you only pay once – It’s like a refill ;o)

7 Reasons you need to Stop Stressing out and how

1/5/2015

While the stress response is a normal, and at times beneficial, bodily response to our environment, the problem is when you become unbalanced and your brain stays in constant stress mode. Chronically stressing out can actually kill your brain cells – can kill you!

One can say that stress is the cause of all dis-ease – it is known as The Killer Number 1.

I'm sure that knowing this helps your stress levels considerably right now…. You're welcome.

1. Adrenal fatigue. While adrenal fatigue as a disorder is still under dispute in the medical community, most medical professionals will tell you that constantly stressing your adrenals - tiny little glands that sit atop your kidneys and produce cortisol, the stress hormone - leads to an imbalance that, left unchecked, can cause all kinds of problems from inflammation to depression.

2. Memory problems. Studies examining memory have found one major constant that affects what and how well we can remember things. The more stressed out we are, the more our short-term and long-term memories are affected. Chronic stress has also been linked to Alzheimer's disease and dementia in the elderly.

3. Weakened Immune System. Studies have shown that prolonged stress presents strain on the cellular functions that support the immune system. Stress causes hormone imbalances, poor sleep patterns, and wears down on organs. Suppressed immune function readily leads to increased sickness and reduced ability to combat ailments.

4. Unwanted Weight Gain. Some resources suggest that increased hormone cortisol levels related to stress cause weight gain. There is also a strong correlation between stress and weight gain suggesting that ongoing stress patterns generate poor nutrition habits, increased use of food as a support system, and improper meal schedules.

5. Musculoskeletal and Physiological Imbalances. Stress is a highly tacking process that depletes energy from bodily systems affecting work and activity performance. Stress is often a culprit for generating muscle tension throughout the body. This muscle tension is most commonly experienced in the spine with discomfort radiating through the neck, back, and shoulders. Neck tension is often diagnosed as the source of many headaches. Stress also greatly affects digestive function, reproductive organ health, and hormone balance. One can see how readily stress generates hormone and energy imbalances especially for those who have skin disorders like acne and eczema.

6. Aging faster. Look at someone's brain scan and you can't tell their chronological age, but you can tell what age their body thinks it is. The more stress you are under, the "older" your brain looks and acts. All the wrinkle cream in the world can't help you if you are a die-hard stress case.

7. Reduced Quality of Life and Social Relationships. Most people have difficulty managing stress and associate themselves with the factors causing this stress. Without managing stress, this negative energy manifests into emotions and physical reactions. As social beings, others encountering someone else's stress manifestations will either facilitate these stress reactions further (like attracts like) making the environment even worse. Or, those who are sensitive to others' stress responses will choose to remove themselves from this social environment. Stress can adversely affect our relationships with others causing us to lose healthy relationships and foster further negative social relationships.

No matter how stressed you feel after a long day of work, dealing with family matters and friends demands and whatever you need to handle in a day – there are ways to relax, recharge and calm down your nervous system.  You might practice yoga or meditation, go for a walk, chill out with some soothing music, have (self-) massages or pamper yourself. Just make sure you have a few options so you can do something every day.

At JOYA we recommend daily 10 minutes of self-massages. As stress often tenses your neck and shoulder muscles you can easily bring relief by using a JOYA Classic or Mini to massage this area effectively without breaking your fingers ;o). Also spending a few minutes every evening and gently massaging your face brings huge relief. Make sure you go along the hairline where we hold lots of tension and don’t forget your jaw line – especially if you have to bit your tongue often to stop you from saying what you truly think!!! The JOYA-Pen or Mini are best suitable for facial massage and bring fast relaxation, Bliss in Seconds as many customers say.

I just got an email the other day with a short interview with Don Tolman about Breast Cancer. It made me think AND it inspired me to keep up my daily Dry Body Brushing. Because now I have another reason to do it.

Also one of my customers shared with me that she and her husband have been dry-brushing for over 20 years and both enjoy great health and beautiful skin ;o)

Once you realise that this 3 minutes a day Ayurvedic treatment does not only keep your breasts healthy but detoxes your whole body, supports your immune system, increases your well-being, fights cellulite and gives you beautiful skin, then you can't help and start making it part of your morning routine. Isn't it amazing that something that doesn't take longer than brushing your teeth can literally extend your life, simply through its detoxing power... When are you going to start?

Dry Brushing Basics

JOYA Crystal Body BrushJOYA Crystal Body Brush - Triple Detox Power
You brush your hair, your teeth, how about your body? From shedding dead skin cells, boosting your circulation, to stimulating nerve endings and just feeling awesome, dry body brushing is a highly beneficial spa treatment that detoxes the whole body and you can easily enjoy that at home as regular as brushing your teeth.

Here's a crash course in body brushing basics:

With a soft brush (like the JOYA Crystal Brush Roller), you brush to massage the surface of your skin. You do that on dry skin (Dry Body Brushing) and then rinse off the toxins and dead skin cells released by the brushing and left on the skin). After the shower you can apply a moisturiser with essential oils (like Grapefruit) to enhance the effect.

Dry brushing promotes lymphatic drainage and therefore detoxes the whole body. That's why it's important to move the brush in the same direction in which lymphatic fluid flows: towards the heart. So you go up your legs, brushing only upwards (not up and down or circles), up the lower back and tummy (here you can brush in clockwise motion). Then down the neck and down the arms towards your heart.

Never use hard brushes and don’t brush on wounds.

If cellulite – toxins stored in the fat cells – is a challenge for you – brush those areas a bit longer, not harder! As such the whole treatment only takes about 3 minutes.

Do you agree, glowing skin, enhanced overall well-being and smooth legs are worth these few minutes? So get yourself a body brush. If you like to triple the effect of the dry brushing treatment use the JOYA Crystal Massage Brush which combines the benefits of brushing with the detoxification of massage plus the supporting energies of crystals.

June 2017: The JOYA Brush has been discontinued.

Are you or a loved one wearing reading glasses?

12/3/2014

If you or anyone you care about has to wear glasses to read or drive - I highly recommend to visit Leo Angart's Vision Training!!! He is currently in Australia - in Sydney this coming weekend ...

As you know I only recommend what I know is great. I just had the amazing experience last weekend to improve my vision with Leo's exercises...

While making a note in my calendar during the Christmas break I suddenly felt like woohoo this is all blurry and I had to back off to see clearly. I was shocked. As this continued I went to see an optometrist who - guess what - recommended reading glasses. If you know me, you'll know that I believe in body - mind connection and natural healing. So I denied and told him I'll fix it.

With an expression of "good luck - see you soon" he let me go.

I remembered seeing Leo's Book and flyer at an MBS Festival years ago and wanted to check out when he is coming back to OZ. A few days later I went to Wrays Organic for coffee and while flipping through the Living Now Magazine I saw his add - he is coming to OZ in March.

So I registered at vision-training.com and went last weekend. I am totally amazed and thrilled beyond words!!!! Just from the exercises we did in those 2 days I don't have to hold things further away anymore. Some people were able to take notes without glasses on the second day. Genevieve, a lady I met started reading her sms without glasses - she could see a word before at arm-length away.... And even very far-sighted people started to correct their vision.

I truly - from the bottom of my heart - recommend Leo's course to anyone of you who wears glasses or is getting close to it! Check out his web page and contact the local organisers. I'm not getting paid for this - I recommend it based on my and others results. It works - amazingly fast!
Beside that Leo is extremely knowledgeable and entertaining too ;o)
Picture
IF you can't make it I highly recommend his Books.

"Read Again Without Glasses" explains all you need to know about the topic, has a great description of all exercises plus a DVD to show them too.

"Improve your Eyesight Naturally" is another great book - more general, covering other eye problems too.

What would it mean to you and your life if you could throw away your glasses???

To your magical eyes (as Leo would say)
Warmly
Ellen from JOYA

I was glad to read in the Spa Australasia Magazine that Trend-spotters like Susie Ellis and Kirien Withers state that the market has opened up to energetic treatments over the past 10 years.

And that makes me proud, then since 2004 JOYA has been in the forefront of this revolution combining the relaxing effect of massage for body and mind with the balancing energies of crystals with their unique, ergonomic and easy to use massage rollers with freely rotating crystal spheres. And while always in contact with the client’s body, JOYA's handy tools take the strain off therapist's thumbs while massaging.

Treatments with JOYA are proven to go beyond a simple massage or facial into a whole world of profoundly deeper relaxation and balance for a healthy and vital body, mind and soul.

Priscilla French, Massage & Beauty Therapist at Priscilla's Holistic Massage and Beauty in Glenorie, NSW wrote:

“My clients have reported an incredible sense of calm and relaxation that they have never experienced before. I couldn't imagine not having my joyas which is amazing because I have been massaging for twenty years. JOYA is the best tool I have ever used; they save my thumbs and give me both physical and alternative choices for my clients.”

Feedback like this shows me regularly that JOYA does good for therapists and their clients and that makes my job so rewarding.

But like in nature it is the business that is most responsive to changes that will survive in a competitive market. So keeping up with trends and the demand for new, powerful treatments is certainly going to support the success of your Spa, Beauty (and Hair) Salon, Massage Practice, Healing or Wellness Center.

Follow the trend and learn the IICT and ATMS approved JOYA Crystal Massage!

Precious Energies – Crystals for Health and Well-being

6/3/2013

Picture
Did you ever feel drawn to a crystal and then, when you found out about its properties, instantly knew what attracted you to it? Is it magic? Not really. It’s resonance, or energy exchange. This energetic interaction actually has the ability to bring body, mind, soul and emotions back into a natural balanced state. It is a way of supporting the body in a natural process of self-repair.

Crystals have been used for thousands of years in many ancient cultures as a natural part of medicine, for elixirs, protection, good luck, rituals and other purposes.

How can crystals lift headaches, improve our skin, support concentration, bring inner peace or energise and improve the quality of water or oils? A crystal's mineral constituents, structure and method of formation give it a specific vibration—an electromagnetic field, which does not alter nor get out of balance. It has been scientifically proven that the nuclei of human cells emit light impulses that are used for internal communication between cells and for coordinating tissues and organs. These biophotons are apparently affected by the electromagnetic resonance of crystals, although the exact mechanism is still to be discovered, though it could be described in the way  the vibration of a guitar string makes the guitar body resonate.

When the electromagnetic field of a crystal comes into contact with the biophotons it influences:

  • energy flow in the body (which may be called the meridians or activity of the chakras);
  • stimulation of electrical nerve impulses;
  • activity of the hormonal glands;
  • metabolism of cells, tissue and organs
It is not only the physical body that is stimulated but also corresponding emotional, mental and spiritual planes—making crystal healing a holistic process. So whether crystals are worn, used to energise water or massage oils, use in massage itself or placed on or around the body, their energies have a beneficial effect.

How Massage Heals Sore Muscles

Back Massage with JOYA Crystal Massage Rollers
February 6, 2012, 12:01 am  By NICHOLAS BAKALAR

A massage after vigorous exercise unquestionably feels good, and it seems to reduce pain and help muscles recover. Many people -- both athletes and health professionals - have long contended it eases inflammation, improves blood flow and reduces muscle tightness. But until now no one has understood why massage has this apparently beneficial effect.

Now researchers have found what happens to muscles when a masseur goes to work on them.

Their experiment required having people exercise to exhaustion and undergo five incisions in their legs in order to obtain muscle tissue for analysis. Despite the hurdles, the scientists still managed to find 11 brave young male volunteers. The study was published in the Feb. 1 issue of Science Translational Medicine.

On a first visit, they biopsied one leg of each subject at rest. At a second session, they had them vigorously exercise on a stationary bicycle for more than an hour until they could go no further. Then they massaged one thigh of each subject for 10 minutes, leaving the other to recover on its own. Immediately after the massage, they biopsied the thigh muscle in each leg again. After allowing another two-and-a-half hours of rest, they did a third biopsy to track the process of muscle injury and repair.

Vigorous exercise causes tiny tears in muscle fibers, leading to an immune reaction -- inflammation -- as the body gets to work repairing the injured cells. So the researchers screened the tissue from the massaged and unmassaged legs to compare their repair processes, and find out what difference massage would make.

They found that massage reduced the production of compounds called cytokines, which play a critical role in inflammation. Massage also stimulated mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses inside cells that convert glucose into the energy essential for cell function and repair. "The bottom line is that there appears to be a suppression of pathways in inflammation and an increase in mitochondrial biogenesis," helping the muscle adapt to the demands of increased exercise, said the senior author, Dr. Mark A. Tarnopolsky.

Dr. Tarnopolsky, a professor of pediatrics and medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, said that massage works quite differently from Nsaids and other anti-inflammatory drugs, which reduce inflammation and pain but may actually retard healing. Many people, for instance, pop an aspirin or Aleve at the first sign of muscle soreness. "There's some theoretical concern that there is a maladaptive response in the long run if you're constantly suppressing inflammation with drugs," he said. "With massage, you can have your cake and eat it too-massage can suppress inflammation and actually enhance cell recovery."

"This is important research, because it is the first to show that massage can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines which may be involved in pain," said Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School. She was not involved in the study. "We have known from many studies that pain can be reduced by massage based on self-report, but this is the first demonstration that the pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines can be reduced." she said.

Getting a massage from a professional masseur is obviously more expensive than taking an aspirin. But, as Dr. Field points out, massage techniques can be taught. "People within families can learn to massage each other," she said. "If you can teach parents to massage kids, couples to massage each other. This can be cost effective." (And if you use a JOYA Massager it will be effortlessly and enjoyable for the massaging partner too - author's note)

Dr. Tarnopolsky suggests that, in the long run, a professional massage may even be a better bargain than a pill. "If someone says "This is free and it might make you feel better, but it may slow down your recovery, do you still want it?" he asked. "Or would you rather spend the 50 bucks for a post-exercise massage that also might enhance your recovery?"

Correction: An earlier version of this article misidentified where mitochondria are found; they are inside of cells, but in the cytoplasm, not the nuclei.

Massage Therapy - How Much Should You Talk To Your Clients?

29/10/2012

Did you read the second last post about Deeper Relaxation with JOYA, where Priscilla was sharing that her normally talkative clients stay quite and relaxed during JOYA-Massages?

This made me think about the topic of Talking during Treatments - and I did some research - see what I've found and feel free to comment!

Article from Shama Kern’s website: www.thaihealingmassage.com

Should you talk to your clients during a massage therapy session? Should you let your clients talk while they are receiving their massage? I have often heard that therapists should discourage talking by their clients and that they should not talk much either.

I am convinced that this advice is flawed for several reasons:

Not everyone processes information in the same way

  1. Some people have a more developed auditory sense and they feel most comfortable processing information through hearing and talking.
  2. Some people are more visually oriented. They will notice people’s hair color, eye color, dress, and they like to “see it before they believe it”
  3. Some people are kinaesthetic. They like to feel things.
These characteristics are always mixed, i.e. nobody is 100% auditory for example. But one of the three is generally predominant. Let me tell you a story to illustrate the point. Once I had a girlfriend, and when we had any point of contention I tried to explain my side of the story to her, and she used to get upset while I could not understand why. I just couldn't get her to carry on a meaningful discussion with me to solve our issues.

How better communication saved my relationship

When I learned about the different ways people process information, a light bulb went on in my head. I am mostly auditory and therefore like to talk, teach, write and explain things. That makes sense to me. But it didn’t make sense to her at all since she was mostly kinesthetic. She just wanted to be held and hugged and she couldn’t care less about all my logic and arguments. She needed to feel that everything was alright whereas I wanted to explain and discuss it. It was the high road to miscommunication and we generally both ended up frustrated.

When I told her what I had learned, we worked out a solution. She acknowledged my need to talk about issues and was more willing to listen. I reduced my explanations and hugged and held her more. As a result we were both happier and able to sort out our differences much more effectively.

What does all this have to do with professional massage therapy? A lot, as you will see. Imagine a highly auditory client coming to you for a session. Naturally he or she is interested in what you do, how it works, and why you do something. If you turn on your silent mode, your client will not feel very comfortable with you, will not trust you as much, and a good client/therapist relationship is less likely to develop. Not good for your repeat business.

Clients who are more visually oriented like to be shown or demonstrated something, whereas kinesthetic clients prefer to just lie down and experience the session. If you try to talk a lot to kinesthetic clients, you will annoy them and they won’t feel a good connection with you.

How do you find out what kind of person you are dealing with?

Often you can pick up clues by the way how people talk and act and what words they use (“I see”, “I hear you”, “I get the feeling…”, etc.) But the easiest way  is to ask your client a question:

  • “Would you like me to explain what I am doing or would you rather just experience it?”
  • “Are you interested in the background of this therapy or shall we just get on with it?”
  • “Do you want me to show you a little how this works or would you prefer to just get started?”
You elicit a response that gives you the clues you need. If you arbitrarily decide that talking in a massage therapy session is not appropriate, you will override some client’s need to talk and your relationship will be somewhat similar to the one I initially had with my ex-girlfriend, although on a more subtle level.

Don’t decide what is right for your clients. Let them make that decision. Here is another issue:

You don’t know your client’s most important reason for getting a massage

I have had many massage clients who clearly needed to talk about something that they could not express easily elsewhere. People tend to trust their therapists, doctors, and hair dressers with their stories. If you now say that it is none of your business to be a counsellor or psychologist, you are right. But there is nothing wrong with being a good listener and showing empathy and a caring attitude.

So what if  a client talks through most of the session! It is their money, and if it makes them happy, who are we to tell them that they are wrong? We earn the same money if they talk or not. Let me tell you another story. Once I had a client who had been gang raped and was understandably highly traumatized. She had withdrawn from people and had a hard time trusting anyone. She had not had massage for a long time either.

When I began working with her, she poured out all her grief and talked throughout the entire session. In the end she was very happy that I listened supportively and she grew to trust me. I worked on her many times, and she kept talking throughout most of the sessions. I don’t know how much she felt of the massage, but what I do know is that she loved the sessions. Her need to talk was more important to her than to experience the massage. She was one of my most loyal clients.

To talk or not to talk is an important skill in the arsenal of good therapists

My suggestion is to keep an open mind to your client’s needs. Don’t decide what is right for them and do not become attached to doing things your way. Some of your massage clients will talk a lot, and some will not utter a word. There is no right or wrong here. As massage therapists we are better off going with the flow and our client’s natural  propensity for processing information than establishing a rule that talking during massage sessions is inappropriate.

I am not suggesting that massage therapists should talk more during sessions, but I am proposing that a rule of talking as little as possible is not always the best choice and can even be counter-productive  Learning to pick up verbal and physical clues from clients, asking pertinent questions that give clients a choice, using our intuition instead of rules,  and allowing them to choose the reason why they come to us for their massage sessions can go a long way towards establishing better rapport, trust and productive communication  with our clients.

I just got this heart-warming feedback from our JOYA-Practitioner Priscilla from Priscilla's Holistic Massage and Beauty, Glenorie, NSW:
“Hi Ellen, I just wanted to give you some feedback. Since I have implemented my Joya crystal massage rollers into my treatments all of my client s have reported an incredible sense of calm and relaxation that they have never experienced before. I have also noticed clients who like to chat through their massage now stay quiet right through their massage which is so amazing that they relax that way. I use them in every single treatment I offer and I couldn't imagine not having them now which is amazing because I have been massaging for twenty years. Joya crystal massage rollers are quite simply the best tool I have ever used, they save my thumbs and give me both physical and alternative choices for my clients so the best of both worlds, thanks so much for bringing us this fantastic tool. Best regards Priscilla French

I actually heard from others too, that clients relax deeper and easier - It can only be the positive energy of the crystals that support the body to return to it's natural balanced state.

Are you using JOYA? How do your clients respond?

Silent nights could be at your fingertips. Research from Miami University shows that infants and toddlers who were massaged daily for 15 minutes prior to bedtime fell asleep more easily by the end of the month-long study.

The Touch Research Institute is dedicated to studying the effects of touch therapy. The TRIs have researched the effects of massage therapy at all stages of life, from newborns to senior citizens. In these studies theTRIs have shown that touch therapy has many positive effects. For example, massage therapy:
    1. Facilitates weight gain in preterm infants
    2. Enhances attentiveness
    3. Alleviates depressive symptoms
    4. Reduces pain
    5. Reduces stress hormones
    6. Improves immune function

Benefits of Massage Therapy for Cancer Patients

29/7/2012

Cancer patients can benefit from massage therapy in many ways. Massage is proven to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, and provide a relaxed state of mind. Research finally shows what people who understand the mind and body connection have known for thousands of years that there is a the positive connection between massage and the nervous system and that massage impacts our health in a beneficial way.

A major benefit of massage as a medical treatment is a sense of peace and calm, created in the meditative state, allowing the patient to calmly deal with emotional issues cancer patients suffers from and also induces healing at the cellular level.

Research into the effects of touch on healing has led the medical community to prescribe massage for cancer patients, who report reduced pain, improved coping skills and self-esteem, and a better quality of life.

A new field called oncology massage is expanding to treat cancer patients. Oncology massage therapists have specialized training in cancer treatments and the side effects of standard treatments.

Cancer patients should discuss the benefits of massage with their oncologists to determine how massage therapy will benefit an individual patient. Most cancer patients can benefit from reduced stress and greater relaxation provided by a massage. Some cancer patients may have conditions that put them at risk of problems during a massage. These patients should have massage only under a health care provider’s guidance and by an oncology massage therapist.

"Attending the Joya Training was a great way to experience what a Joya Crystal Massage can do for you. It is a relaxing, non invasive, gentle way of having a massage that leaves you walking away feeling relaxed. Being shown the different techniques in using the Joya has given me greater confidence to achieve the best results that my clients are looking for. What a great concept! Thank you for the training, I enjoyed it immensely and you did a great job. And my customers who have tried a Joya massage now regularly request the “crystal massage” which I can perform without strain to my hands."
